Space Walk, the largest experiential art piece in Korea, was planned, made, and installed by POSCO and donated to citizens of Pohang

It is an experiential art piece of a new concept that was difficult to see in Korea as a sculpture in which the art and the audience become one landscape by walking directly into the artwork from the artwork that the viewer only looked at and should not touch

The graceful steel curves and the lights embroidering the night sky symbolize Pohang, the city of steel and light. The 360-degree panoramic view brings you the beautiful scenery of Pohang, the glittering night view of the steel mill, and the sunrise and sunset of Yeongil Bay.

The German artist duo, who majored in fine art and media art, gained international recognition with the architectural sculpture that only becomes complete when someone is walking on it. Space Walk

“Space Walk” has a double meaning of moving in outer space outside the spaceship and walking in a space.

The artwork’s structure, consisting of loops, expresses a space and celestial motions, and the act of walking in the curvy art piece, high up in the air, connects to the experience of going on a spacewalk.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Space Walk is an art piece planned, produced, and installed by POSCO and donated to the citizens of Pohang.
The art piece is designed by the world-renowned German husband-and–wife artists Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth and manufactured and installed by POSCO E&C, using carbon steel(SM355) and stainless steel(STS329J3L), produced by POSCO, as the main materials. 

Walk slowly along the track to have the mystical experience of walking on art, on clouds, and of swimming in space and the universe, as the title Space Walk suggests. 

The graceful curves formed of steel and the lights embroidering the night sky symbolize Pohang, the city of steel and light.

Experience the 360 degree panoramic view that brings you the beautiful scenery of Pohang, the glittering night view of the steel mill, and the sunrise and sunset of Yeongil Bay.
Experience the relativity of time and space, and the aesthetic of slowness on Space Walk.  As the largest experiential art piece and the first of its kind in Korea with a concept that has never been seen before, Space Walk is a landmark to represent Pohang and, further, all of Korea.

2021 Space Walk in Hwanho Park

The largest experiential art piece in Korea, Space Walk

Hwanho Park, an urban citizen park created by POSCO donating 20 billion won in 2001, was reborn as a representative attraction of Pohang through the Space Walk in 2021.

POSCO planned and produced the Space Walk, investing 11.7 billion won over a total of 2 years and 7 months, and donated it to Pohang City in December 2021.

Space Walk has accomplished the feat of winning the Presidential Award at the 2022 Korea Good Place Awards.

Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Pohang while walking on the Space Walk, the largest experiential art piece in Korea.

Park1538

Complex cultural space with citizens, Park1538

Park1538 is located next to the POSCO headquarters overlooking the Pohang Steelworks, and was created as an eco-friendly healing space in harmony with steel and nature.

Around the POSCO History Museum opened in 2003, it was reborn as a complex cultural space containing the iron story and the vision of POSCO by creating spaces such as a POSCO Museum, waterside park, and Hall of Fame in April 2021.

At the POSCO History Museum, you can feel the moments of POSCO’s growth and moving moments from its foundation in 1968. And in the POSCO Museum, you can feel the history of POSCO and the passion of POSCO, and experience various contents about the eco-friendliness of steel.

In particular, the POSCO Museum has won many prestigious awards at home and abroad, such as the iF Design Award and the national award of Korean landscape architecture.

Pohang Canal

Pohang's old waterway, The Pohang Canal

Pohang Canal is one of the representative attractions of Pohang, also called Pohang's Venice. At the time POSCO was built, it was a small waterway connecting Dongbin Port and the Hyeongsan River, but it was widened and the surrounding area restored and redeveloped as a canal.

Pohang Cruise, which travels along the canal, passes through major attractions in Pohang, such as Jukdo Market and Yeongildae Beach.

Fireworks Festival

Pohang International Fireworks Festival in the City of Fire and Light

The Pohang International Fireworks Festival began in 2004 when POSCO held a fireworks festival with the theme of ‘fire’, the symbol of the blast furnace in the steelworks, and ‘light’, the symbol of Yeongilman, Pohang, in commemoration of Pohang Citizens’ Day. Since then, it has developed into Pohang's representative festival with a cumulative attendance of 13 million.

A total of 30,000 LED lights and 60km optical cables were installed at Pohang Works to create a night view for citizens to enjoy, and a communication board, a super-large electronic display board, was installed in the Songdo and Haedo areas for citizens to use.

As such, POSCO is supporting Pohang City to attract 10 million tourists through various contents.

Hyoja Art Hall, a representative performance facility in Pohang

Since opening the Hyoja Art Hall in 1980, POSCO has supported Pohang citizens to enjoy various genres of performances and films, including concerts, plays, musicals, dance, and Korean traditional music.

First football-only stadium in Korea, Pohang Steelyard

In 1973, POSCO founded Pohang Steelers, and in 1990, built the first football-only stadium in Korea.

In addition, POSCO is making efforts for the development of Pohang and Korean football such as building a clubhouse and introducing the first youth system.
